Top Items You Need To Secure For Your Family In Disaster Situations
Preparing for a disaster situation does not even have to be done every
day. All you have to do is stock up with the most important items that you will
surely need during such days. Here is a list of the things that you should
keep.
Food
Food supply can become scarce during catastrophic events or disasters.
Do not make this a problem by observing these tips.
·
Start a vegetable garden in your
backyard. When disaster comes, you can just harvest these vegetables and add
them up to your supply in the house. You can also use small pots so that you
can bring them inside the house especially when the rain and winds are too
strong.
·
Always store a box full of food
that can last a long time like canned goods, candies, granola bars, cookies,
peanut butter, and similar stuff. Make sure that the expiry date of these is
still far off.
Water
The water sources during disaster situations may be contaminated and
the last thing you would want is to get your family sick. So stock up with
containers of potable water and you need to also store water for washing,
laundry, and others. If tap water is available, utilize this but make sure to
disinfect it properly. You can:
·
Disinfect it by filtering the
water through a clean cloth or using the coffee filter.
·
Place the filtered water inside
a clean container and put in 1/8 teaspoon of unscented liquid household
chlorine to every gallon of water. If your water is only a liter or a quart,
you can add only 2 drops of the household chlorine.
·
Stir the mixture well and let it
stand for 30 minutes or even longer before consuming it.
You can also fix up a water catchment system. You can buy large
barrels that are made of wood, polyethylene or fibreglass at the nearest
hardware store. Station this directly under the gutter so that the water runs
directly through to it and inside the barrel. You can fetch water through its
built-in faucet. This water is not fit for drinking so you have to disinfect it
to use for other purposes.
Communication
Mobile phones do not have a very long battery life and if the
communication towers are destroyed, its network goes down with it. Instead, you
may use a CB radio for your car or walkie talkies for your family. You can pair
off and give a walkie talkie to each pair. The good thing about this is that it
does not rely on a network to work and its audio clear within a long range.
Just check the specific distance that your gadget can support.
Electricity
When power is out, we need a handy solar panel as an alternative
source since almost all of our things work on electric power. Get one that can
easily fit into your backpack so that you can bring it anywhere with you.
We all know that disaster can hit us anytime. To give us a better
chance of surviving, it is better to be prepared when such catastrophic events
hit us.
